my mission in Ukraine
Humanitarian aid on the front lines. Evacuations. Relief. Hope.
Humanitarian Aid in Ukraine
My name is Ruben Mawick. I'm 22 years old and have spent over two years as a humanitarian aid worker with Aequitasaid in Ukraine. I've evacuated civilians from active combat zones, treated the wounded, and supported people who've lost everything.
During one mission, I was seriously injured myself – yet I returned. Not out of bravery, but because people there need help every single day.
Today, I organize urgently needed relief supplies in Germany, raise funds, and give lectures to show what's really happening in Ukraine – far beyond the news images we see here.
Photo Documentation
Over the past two years, I've captured countless moments. I've collected many photographs that reveal both the scale of destruction and the deep humanity within these crisis zones.
These images serve not only as documentation but as witnesses to the stories I share in my lectures. Here's a glimpse into my archive, which I continuously expand to bring the unfiltered reality closer to the world.

"You can't imagine the brutality of war – and even when you've lived through it, you can barely grasp what you've seen and survived. In my lectures, I bring people in Germany as close as possible to this reality – safely, but uncensored."

Lectures
I give lectures at schools, political institutions, Rotary and Lions clubs, companies, and the German military. My goals are:
Instead of abstract news, I report first-hand from the situation on the ground.
About humanitarian work, the reality of war, and what help truly means.
Promoting peace, responsibility, and the value of our democracy.
Practical knowledge for soldiers, first responders, and aid workers.
For students, making complex connections tangible.
Showing why aid is necessary, how it works, and why it concerns us all.
"I look forward to educating people, opening perspectives, and making aid possible together."
Lessons from the Field
In the field, I learned things no training could ever fully convey:
The ability to think clearly under extreme pressure, assess situations realistically, and make decisions in seconds is often more important than any equipment.
Drones, vehicles, communications – everything matters. But in the end, it's people who assess situations, weigh risks, and take responsibility.
Whether in civilian or military contexts: clear, fast, and reliable communication can save lives – or in the worst case, endanger them.
Humanitarian aid and military structures pursue different objectives, but on the ground both sides depend on each other: for security, logistics, evacuations, and the protection of civilians. Only when both sides respect each other, share information, and act in coordination can operations be carried out successfully and safely.
